Pupil Leadership and Responsibilities

At Woodlands Infant School, pupils have opportunities to contribute to school life, help others and make their voices heard. Taking on responsibilities develops confidence, independence and teamwork, helping pupils recognise that they can make a positive difference to their school community.

We encourage pupils to take pride in their contributions and understand that being responsible involves listening, showing kindness and following through on a task. Adults guide and support pupils in their roles, with responsibilities suited to their age and needs.

Our School Council meets regularly to discuss pupils’ views, suggest improvements and contribute to decisions that affect the school community. Minutes from each meeting are published below so that children, families and visitors can see what has been discussed and the actions being taken.

School Council

Our School Council gives pupils a voice in school life. Representatives share ideas and suggestions from their classmates and discuss ways to improve our school. They learn to consider what matters to others, explain their ideas and listen respectfully to different opinions.

Taking part helps pupils understand that their views are valued, while recognising that decisions need to consider the needs of the wider school community. With adult support, representatives develop confidence in speaking on behalf of others and sharing feedback with their classes. These experiences bring democracy to life in a meaningful, age-appropriate way.

Minutes from each meeting are published below so that children and families can see what has been discussed and the actions being taken.

Playtime Buddies

Our Playtime Buddies help make playtimes welcoming and inclusive. They encourage friendly play, help pupils join in and look out for anyone who may be feeling left out. By modelling kindness and cooperation, they help others feel that they belong.

The role develops pupils’ empathy, communication and confidence as they learn how small actions can make a difference to someone else’s day. Buddies are supported by staff and know when to seek adult help. They are not expected to resolve serious disagreements or manage other pupils’ behaviour; adults remain responsible for supervision and responding to concerns.

We rotate our Playtime Buddies on a regular basis.

Wellbeing Champions

Our Wellbeing Champions help promote kindness, positive relationships and wellbeing across the school. They encourage pupils to care for themselves and others, recognise feelings and understand the importance of talking to a trusted adult about worries.

Through their role, pupils develop an understanding that wellbeing matters to everyone and that a caring school community is built through everyday actions. They model thoughtful behaviour and help reinforce positive wellbeing messages. Adults support the champions, and responsibility for responding to pupils’ worries remains with school staff.

Everyday classroom responsibilities

Everyday classroom responsibilities give pupils opportunities to develop independence and take pride in their surroundings. Helping to organise resources, care for equipment and support classroom routines teaches pupils that their contributions matter and that everyone has a part to play.

These tasks help pupils practise cooperation, organisation and perseverance. They learn to carry out a task carefully, ask for help when needed and consider how their actions support others. We encourage all pupils to participate, adapting responsibilities and providing support so that pupils with different strengths and needs can contribute successfully.

Living our Values

Pupil responsibilities provide practical opportunities to live our values of Belief, Respect, Independence, Curiosity, Creativity and Kindness. Pupils build belief in their abilities, show respect for others and become increasingly independent as they carry out their roles.

These experiences also bring our Pocket Principles to life: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Kind and Be Ready to Learn. We recognise pupils’ efforts and contributions, helping them see themselves as valued members of Woodlands and supporting every pupil to “Be the Best Me I Can Be.”
